This raw piece of black tourmaline on a metal stand with a round base stands out for its dual character: the front is dominated by pale, pinkish-beige host rock, while compact black crystals emerge at the back and sides. The deep black of the mineral, known as schorl, results from its high iron content, while the lengthwise striations of the crystals contrast with the granular texture of the pale rock. The piece changes its expression depending on the side from which it is viewed.

Tourmaline is hard but brittle along its crystal lines, so it should be handled with care. It is best cleaned with a dry, soft cloth.
