Amazonite is a beautiful variety of feldspar, prized for its soft turquoise-green color that instantly brings to mind tropical waters. For thousands of years it has been regarded as a "stone of courage and truth" believed to soothe the nervous system, calm anxiety, and support honest, heartfelt communication. Ancient Egyptians used amazonite for jewelry and amulets, and it was even found among the treasures of Tutankhamun's tomb.
Where does amazonite's characteristic color come from?
Amazonite owes its distinctive blue-green color to trace amounts of lead and water within its crystalline structure. Its natural pattern often features soft white streaks of albite, creating a marbled, oceanic look. Each stone has slightly different intensity, from pale mint to deep turquoise depending on its origin and mineral composition.
How should I care for amazonite to keep its beautiful color?
Wipe amazonite gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. Avoid harsh chemicals, perfumes, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can gradually fade its delicate turquoise hue. Amazonite is a moderately soft stone (6–6.5 on the Mohs scale), so store it separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratches.
Where in the world is the most beautiful amazonite found?
Despite its name, amazonite is not actually mined near the Amazon River. The finest specimens come from Russia (the Ural Mountains), Brazil, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and the United States (especially Colorado, where some of the most intensely colored stones are found). Each region produces amazonite with slightly different tones and patterns.
